Windows and Felt making !

I translated this image to felt which provided a strong contrast between the hard structure and the delicate softness of the felt.
Experimenting with new mediums has always interested me greatly; the experience of using textiles for the first time afforded me the opportunity to harness new skills.  This experience was extended by the use of Nuno felting techniques and allowed me to capture the translucency within the piece. Furthermore it allowed to inject colour and texture into my work.

Windows/ Reflections / Layers

I have developed a particular interest in the old sash windows, how they reflected and distorted the view of the streets and shopping mall. From this I developed the idea of windows and reflections as a central theme to this project.  I extended the study to include new windows, their shapes and structures. As a result I focused on one glass fronted building which I felt gave a strong contrast to the old. The extensive glass front of this building illuminated and embraced the vividness of reflections in all its glory and colour.

At the start of this project “The Urban Environment”, I struggled with ideas and concepts as I was unsure of the expectations of the brief. I approached the subject from a broad perspective, looking at the parasitic nature of urban decay. I thought this would expand the realm in which I could work and lend itself to the exploration of various mediums. My initial concept was to develop a photographic collage of urban decay within the streets of Limerick. I focused on old buildings, their texture and history, while looking at the way in which nature has attempted to reclaim its surface.

Investigation

Sheet one: Highlighting and researching some of the different textures and surfaces.

Today I made a plan of all the different elements within my photo montage e.g: tonal, graphic, how soft and sharp something was !  etc.
From this I intend to make a number of sheets with the different textures and elements for my research into the buildings I have chosen to investigate.

In the last three weeks I have been working on the Idea of Parasidic Nature in an Urban Environment and exploring how nature (the parasite)  is living of the city (its host) growing out of buildings and gutters ect.

As I conducted my research I became more interested in the buildings themselves and how through the medium of photo-collage / montage the buildings took on a more organic look to them. The buildings which were flat , tall and imposing became twisted , distorted and colorful.

This week I will explore this further by making a series of photo-collages/montages and a drawing that will take on the style of a photo-montage.

For The Urban Enviroment project this week I will be exploring photo collage and painting.

I want people to look beyond the obvious and see what you wouldn't normaly be drawn to !

I will do this by trying to screen print the above image over photographs I have taken over the week.

In previous weeks I explored the medium of video and made a piece which I based on my 1st week in Limerick.
I feel the video expresses how I felt at the time and highlights my experience of being robbed on a cold Limerick evening.

If I was to do it again I think I would put my voice in the video instead of the Glasgow accent heard and I would  have a dye running throught the water.

Welcome

Welcome to the Interweb !!!
